Rip Van Winkle is a mysterious story full of odd characters and magical happenings. Rip Van Winkle is a man, a simple man, not the type that often plays in the street. He has a wife and kids and lives on a farm. Rip likes to fish and hunt squirrel and birds. He helps his neighbors with odd jobs all around the village, the ones the husbands won’t do. In this story, Rip Van Winkle meets some questionable characters and encounters an eerie feeling event. I am going to tell you a little bit about the characters, the setting of the time, and the mystical occurrence that happened to Rip Van Winkle. In Rip Van Winkle, there were many alluring characters that stuck out to me. The first was the elderly man that was traveling on foot up the Kaatskill mountains. This old man was short and had thick, shaggy hair. He didn’t speak once to Rip, but did sign Rip to help him. Rip continued on his journey with the old man, not saying a word to him. He went into the future twenty years in one night. This happened because after the old man gave the men the liquor, Rip tried some of it. Then he woke up. His gun and his dog were missing and the old man was not there. Rip walked back to the village and everything looked different. The people looked at him, shocked. Nobody recognized him, he was amused by this. It had been twenty years in one night since he had been home. When Rip got to his house, he was surprised to see that it was all torn apart. He called out for his wife and kids, nobody answered. Rip’s own dog even scowled at him. This displeased him. When he went outside a man came up to him and asked who he was, Rip said he was Rip Van Winkle and that he loved the king. A woman then shoved through the crowd and took him home with her.
