Many people have trouble deciding what they should have or not have by trusting their gut or going with what they need to accomplish. Decisiveness may come from want in which it occurs by having a desire to possess something. Although, it might also come from need whereas it is something required for a safe, stable and healthy life. For instance, in “The Necklace” it is a short story by Guy de Maupassant about a young woman who decides to dress for a ball whom she and her husband were invited to, however she dresses with apparel and jewelry that she cannot afford in order for her to look wealthy. Another example may come from necessity which can relate to the short story by Howard Moss titular “King Midas” in which it contains decisions made by their desires and their essentials. We decide what we want versus what we need through social judgement,emotions, and necessities. For example, in “The Necklace” it shows what type of woman the character was by the things she wanted to acquire in which it says, “She has no proper wardrobe, no jewels, nothing. And those were the only things she loved.” This quote in particular indicates that she wanted to fit in along with the other wealthy people. It also states how she wanted to obtain fine jewelry because it was what made her happy. However, she did not want these things because of its appearance but mostly because of its value. Having social approval on what people wear affects their decisions of what they want overall in order to fit in or blend in with the others.Whereas, this can make a person become more needy as the time passes by.
