The Declaration of the Rights of Female Citizen was created in 1791, by a notorious feminist named Olympe de Gouge. During this time sexual equality was very important, and Olympe de Gouge wrote this document to prove that the French Government failed during the French Revolution. Olympe De Gouge was arguing that women should simply have the same rights as men, and she was a strong example of early feminism during this time. Gouges work outlined what rights women should have. A few including basic rights such as security., property, and liberty. This document is a reaction to the French Revolution as Gouge noticed women weren’t getting their basic rights as a citizen. Shortly after Gouge published The Declaration of the Rights of Women and the Female Citizen, she was tried and found guilty, and was executed for expressing her opinion. This source represents the time period because men were dominant in society and it was Gauge’s voice that impacted the laws and rules that later impacted women in a positive way.
