If you were to change something about the education system in the U.S, what would you change? How would you critique the quality of education? Education historian Diane Ravitch answers these questions in her excerpt that was published in 2014, “The Essentials of a Good Education.” In her text Ravitch argues that the education system is flawed and that the vision of a good education is unfair and unequal. Ravitch supports her claim by providing examples of the negative effects of the educational system and using historical context.
Significant Teachings from Your Name is Renée Frozen with terror at the sound of voices. Rumbling stomachs begging for unreachable food. Never seeing the sunlight unless fortunate enough to have a window. Lying still for hours with horrifying thoughts of being found.
In Edward Koch’s essay he argues that the death penalty can prevent murders and affirm life. Koch begins his counter argument by addressing the issue of the death penalty being barbaric; he argues that while it may not be the most pleasant way to lower the murder rate it is necessary in order to achieve that goal. Since no other major democracy has a murder rate as high as the United States, the death penalty is necessary for lowering it and eliminating the issue of multiple murders. There have been many cases of murders committing the crime again, so if capital punishment was enacted murderers would never get the chance to kill again. When capital punishment is used it highlights the value of human life because it has such a strict punishment,
The first, and most important, is that to live a good life, one must not ruin their soul by committing injustice. This is stated very clearly by him saying that “one shouldn’t do injustice in return for injustice, as the majority of people think—seeing that one should never do injustice” (54). In other words, to commit injustice is to be rewarded with a tainted soul. We cannot make things better by doing more wrong, even if it seems just to us. Two wrongs to not make a right.
In Of Our Spiritual Strivings, the main concept that WEB DuBois had to share were the dangers of double-consciousness and how the idea that a Veil exists between Caucasians and African Americans. He came to realize this when he was at school and they were passing around post cards and one of the children had refused to give him a card because of his skin color. He then realized at that moment that there was a veil between the Caucasians and African Americans. I did find it interesting that he hadn’t had the desire to attempt to remove the veil. DuBois’ desire was for African Americans to hopefully stay close to their roots but also at the same time without integrating into the white culture.

Once the negative component is cut out, the cycle of hurting and healing just to be hurt again will be broken. Then, and only then, will nature be able to take its course and neutralize the

From The Dalai Lama and Howard Cutler's text, “The Source of Happiness” a man discovered he was HIV positive, rightfully, he could not come to terms with it. However, after a year, he said he felt happier than he did before, appreciates things more, and it has transformed his life. Someone else, on the other hand, a woman, started a small health-care company, after a year and a half, the company was bought out for a large amount of money. After a while, she said she is not much happier than before. The man who was HIV positive suffered for a while, but then came to terms with his condition and then started to experience happiness again and said he felt happier than he ever has.

There are different internal compasses that people utilize to point them towards the path of morality. The most common that probably still remains is The Golden Rule also referred to as the ethic of reciprocity. The Golden Rule stands for: “Treat others the way you want to be treated”. Some consider the Golden Rule to be the most universal of moral principles. Yet it does not always send a positive message.
You don't choose your family; they are God's gift to you, as you are to them. My family is my strength and weakness, my wealth and privilege and the love of them and their admiration is much more important than everything. Without loyalty, the world wouldn’t be the same, people would backstab one another and people wouldn’t trust each other, as a result of the lack of loyalty between the people. From reading Antigone, I realized that loyalty was a very essential argument that came in many various forms; such as expressing loyalty to the family and to respect and honor the state or country.
“Do good and avoid evil” is a result of the differing educational, religious and cultural influences on man in the various times and places of his historical development. Thomas Aquinas contended that general principles of the natural law cannot be applied to all men in the same way on the great variety of human affairs, thus arises the diversity of positive laws among various people. Human laws deal with changing and contingent matters and often with singulars, do not have the certitude that belongs to the speculative sciences. Each has its own realm of operation and is sufficient that each have the certitude proper to its own realm. [ Ibid. ]
Holistic health thinks that health is maintained or reduced by the decision you make every day in all areas of your life and this could: emotional, mental, physical, or spiritual and these four functions help us go through the day and keep us going. Wellness is described as the accomplishment of success in these four areas or more. This is the reason why holistic health is not like allopathic health which focuses on the physical disease.
