Defensive driving utilizes safe driving techniques to drive in such a way to identify and anticipate dangerous scenarios in a predictable manner. This practice will help reduce the risk of crashes by anticipating possible collisions and avoiding potential hazards more easily. The big factor in every distracted driving accident is paying attention to something other than driving. The first step to defensive driving is making sure you are concentrated on the road, free from any tasks or distractions that will keep you from focusing on your surroundings. This includes eating, texting, applying makeup, etc.
It’s not just physical distractions that can keep us from concentrating on the streets; our mind can also do just as much distracting. Driving angry, upset, aggressive, tired, or fatigued can put yourself and others in serious danger. We have to stay alert, sharp, and rational when driving as we are putting lives unnecessarily at risk.
After driving for a while we get comfortable and can forget just how dangerous it can be. We get complacent to the risks of driving. When we travel as a family together on weekends my mom, sister, and I like to talk a lot. We sometimes get too into the conversation and our voices rise which makes it difficult for my dad to concentrate on driving. He says that he feels noise distracts him the most when merging onto a highway, or turning left and right at a busy intersection.
