Myself, for example, I am a full-time office manager and serve tables on weekends to pay for the extra necessities like food, gas, and clothing. I drive a nice car, live in a nice house, and dress professionally. Those that see me may assume I have plenty of money or come from money, when in reality, I work two jobs for survival and necessity; hence, the working poor. In my case, I am working towards my degree to rise above my financial struggles and gratefully, the only mouth I have to feed is my own. I would not be able to afford to have a child.
It has been said that poor people do not know how to manage or spend their money. The poor are criticized because they are portrayed as lazy, having lack of intelligence, and making bad decisions. This is a daily stress for those who are having trouble paying for their necessities because people take advantage of them. It’s simply expensive to be poor when places like grocery stores, banks, and even car insurance companies make the poor pay more.
I believe it also means lacking the ability to live comfortably or having pretty much nothing to make it day by day. Some people in the U.S. say they are poor, but have a house, car and all of their bills are paid. They may not have any extra money to spend, but they are richer than they think compared to some people who don’t have that life at all. The difference with Jeanette and her family is that their parents chose to live this lifestyle. It may seem pretty selfish of the parents being they have young children and didn’t think twice about a steady upbringing.
Poverty; a word that is commonly used so often when it comes to individuals being a low classed, low income, American citizen who struggle to find success and an efficient job that pays well. In Barbara Ehrenreich’s article It Is Expensive to Be Poor, published in the online news article company The Atlantic, on January 13,2014, she argues that those who are struggling to support their own family or find an efficient well paying job are obtaining no support from the self-centered government. Ehrenreich also tries to inform the readers that those who are in poverty are treated unfairly and unjust. Through Ehrenreich’s argumentative article, she tries to persuade the readers through reasoning, credible personal background and history, as well as emotional appeals.
Having the power to choose whether to give birth to a boy or girl is a very powerful and disturbing tool. In the book, Unnatural Selection: Choosing Boys over Girls, and the Consequences of a World Full of Men by Mara Hvistendahl, she tells a story about places like China, Vietnam, and India who are aborting female infants because “Males are the dominate gender.” The general research question of this study is to figure out why this is happening without looking at this as a “culture” issue, but as a universal gender imbalance phenomenon. The children of our nation are the future; however, America’s children are suffering. Child poverty, hunger and nutrition, and welfare are growing issues that need to be solved. The statistics provided in The State of America’s Children 2017 Report are eye-opening. Sadly, poverty is threatening America’s children. According to the State of America’s Children in the United States and Alabama 2017 Factsheets, 18 percent of the U.S.’s children were poor in 2016, and 25 percent of Alabama’s children were poor in 2016.
Despite the great wealth the United States possesses, it has for long struggled with poverty which is said to be inherited from one generation to another. The culture of poverty hinders those affected from economic betterment however much assistance they obtain from social programs put in place. The term Culture of poverty is believed to have been coined by Oscar Lewis, who suggested that children who grow up in poverty-stricken families are highly likely to adopt the norms and practices that encourage poverty. Thus, these children, he believed, would replicate the adapted values in their lives which would in turn generate a cycle of intergenerational poverty in the long run (Bell et al, 2013). Thus the culture of poverty is a topic which creates heated debates in both the public and political arenas.
Poverty and its Effects on Education In the United States more than 30 million children are growing up in poverty (Do Something 2014). According to Molly (2014), the 2011 U.S. Census Bureau stated, “that the poverty line is begins with a family of four that earns less than $25,000 per year.” The effects of poverty are very serious, these children suffer way more than the children who grow up with privileges.
Poverty is one of the most horrific epidemics in our society today. Poverty is the state of being extremely poor. It is a very serious problem that many people suffer from today. Many issues such as illness, hunger, and bad sanitation are all causes of poverty. Statistics show that there are over 35 million Americans that live in poverty.
Inefficient policies all around the world and especially in our country are contributing to problems in the society. And the biggest problem which the world faces today is the problem of “Poverty” and “Inequality”. It is hard for one to determine whether poverty causes inequality or is it the other way around because both these problems are interrelated. Poverty is something which is caused due to transferring wealth in to the hands of a specific group and the unjust policies of the government. And inequality is discriminating a person in all spheres of life which gives a rise to sense of deprivation.
