Hearing the word “family,” it is typical to reminisce about holidays spent traveling in packed cars with one’s siblings and parents, of gift giving and cheerful meals, of white-haired, cheek-squeezing grandmas, and of backyard barbeques and celebrations. Many people think of a family as a mother, father and several children, but a family could be almost any group with common characteristics. The term today has several different meanings and carries various linguistic implications. “Family” can also refer to those who belong to a religious or spiritual group or community.

Because society should not decide who one is allowed to consider family, it should be accepted and even encouraged for people to consider their best friends and companions as family, even if they are not related through blood or marriage. Bonds with these kinds of family members are sometimes stronger than the ones shared by siblings.
Families are the building blocks of any society and it has been that way since the beginning. For instance, your family is usually there for you and have helped you throughout your life or are still helping you out with anything. You may occasionally get in fights with your family, but you still love and care for them and will always provide help for them no matter what.
Almost every aspect of our lives involves the term family. For example, in your religion you are thought of as a “family” of believers or at any high school or college, you are considered part of one big “family” of students and faculty. In truth, family is anybody you adore and care about and who likewise feels a similar way about you. I believe that my family is not only my parents who raised me, my little brother and my other close relatives, but also my best friends. My aunt may be a blood relative, but she knows as much about me as the next person. My best friend Abby on the other hand, can tell you anything you would ever want to know regarding me and on top of that, we can practically read each other’s minds. I am not trying to say that my aunt is nothing to me, but Abby is just as much a part of my family as my aunt or any other close family member of mine. Family and friendship go hand-in-hand and therefore, friendship is required in order to have a family.
People’s pets are also oftentimes considered part of family. Although animals are not listed in the dictionary definition of “family”, they can still be thought of as a family member.
