Society has an image of what they should think and research which is considered a theoretical approach. Sociologist use three methods of research to gather their evidence these methods are called structural-functional, social-conflict, and symbolic-interaction approach. These approaches help us understand a family and how they operate. They show there are various methods and observations on how families are able to connect. Structural-functional approach is a complex system in which the parts work together. For a family aspect this would be a great method in order to keep everything in line. Over time families begin to change they grow apart as they are aging. Parents are growing older to the point of retirement and possibly ending up in a retirement home, while their children are living their own lives and raising a family. Behavior is another changing factor within almost every family a child will eventually become a teenager which means a lot more attitude. Teenagers tend to backtalk, argue, and disrespect their parents its part of what they do. Hormones have a lot to do with it they feel depressing, anxiety, emotional which as a result changes their behavior. Teenagers aren’t the only one who has behavioral changes older people in their sixty’s on up tend to be more irritable. Humans are continuously changing which is what the symbolic-interaction approach is about. The three approaches help study and research for sociologist in which case society and families are a perfect fit. This helps bring understanding on how families can operate in various ways and not in one uniform way. These research methods bring us back to the main point which is theory. This is what helps us come up with various methods and options for how our society and families
