What is happiness? To some, they define happiness as the emotion felt through individual content and joy. For others, such as Chris Gardner, define happiness through finally being able to overcome their hardships to be successful. In Chris’s case, he was able to nurture his children with love and happiness that he had attained by working hard. Through everyone’s life, they take on the journey to search for happiness. Happiness is something everyone strives for in order to be in appeasement with oneself. Finding happiness is done in a variety of ways whether it be doing hobbies one enjoys or through materialistic wealth. Everyone has a different story as to how they reach happiness. There are many problems that people may experience as they are on their search for happiness. Problems that come up include negative thoughts that come to mind and there are no philosophical beliefs being practiced. Negativity will hold a person from living to their full potential and can lead to other psychological problems. An unstable lifestyle of a disorganized home or work may lead to unhappiness with one’s self. There are also times of struggles with work that prevents one to provide themselves with basic needs in life. Loneliness and unproductiveness factor into what is keeping an individual from being happy as well. Someone who lacks guidance and support from a knowledgeable person, they will be left lost from happiness. An individual who sets no goals for themselves to achieve will be left with nothing to be praised about nor will they go anywhere without healthy ambitions. Stress often brings one down and prevents them from genuinely enjoying themselves. Finding solace in philosophical ideas such as Feng Shui offers an individual a stable life and the insight to keeping life structured and balanced through relationships, health, and family (Craze 1). In Teach Yourself Feng Shui, it teaches the benefits to keeping the mind at ease and incorporating the layout of your home and office (Craze 1). Feng shui practices offers an individual with blessings of wealth, fame, health, pleasure, friends, relationship, children, and wisdom which are the eight areas that benefit the individual. In the feng shui teachings there is a structure called the pah kwa that sets up the basis of these blessings by basing it off of the direction of your home. The pah kwa is based of an individual’s front door and no matter what direction it faces whether it be north, west, north east, etc. there will be benefits from the blessings. There is a favorable direction though which is south and some benefits include: great health, wisdom from life experiences, fame and wealth are seen well in public eye (Craze 63-64). These blessings along with household layout happen in hopes that chi, or natural energy, will naturally flow through the house (Craze 1).
