What is a family?

Family can mean different things to different people. A simple definition is the traditional family includes a man and woman with their children living in the same household. Family can be a blended family, meaning a man and his kid/s from a previous relationship blending with a woman and her kid/s from a previous relationship. Grandparents that is raising their grandkid/s even with the parent/s also being in the household. Family can be a same sex relationship raising kid/s in a household. With the significant changes within household status in today's society and the divorce rates increasing a family can be a single parent household meaning that it is only one parent in the home. An old saying is "It takes a village to raise a child", so family can have many different meanings depending on who is defining it.

With the rising single parent head of household with kids can also be described a nuclear family. If a parent chooses to be a single parenthood by having a baby by themselves, or adopting a child or children is also a nuclear defined as being a nuclear family. A two-parent household changing to a one-parent household because of death of one of the parent leaving either the father or mother to raise the child or children is also considered as a nuclear family.

What are some examples of family trends?

The family structure has changed since the end of World War II. The traditional two parent household has changed to one-parent household. The responsibilities of grandparents for their children and grandchildren has increased and become an extended family. Increasing female-headed households without the present of a husband with own children. Women having babies out of wedlock being on the rise. Divorce rates increasing leaving families divided.
