The ability to recall anything you have seen, heard, felt, tasted, or smelled is not something to take for granted. It is a gift, and unfortunately not everyone can experience a lifetime of remembering. What is memory? Where does it come from? Why do we have the ability to remember and forget? Whether they are good emotions or bad emotions, you feel something. Memories of a loved one can help you cope and memories of happy times can brighten your day. Memories are like a slideshow in your head, of pictures you couldn’t print. I have an obsession with pictures, I love to look at pictures and remember all of the things I have done. In my room, I have 8 bulletin boards, which are filled with over 150 pictures of the past 3 years of my life dating all the way to last week. I have a growing collage of pictures on my wall that I cherish everyday. Memory is something very important to me because everyday I see, hear and feel things that remind me of my brother, Camden James Ieronimo, who passed away on April-18’th-2002. I often see things like the number 18, and remember him. Like when I randomly flip open to page 18 of a book, I often don’t think it’s a coincidence. Even though I was born on February-17’th-2001, and was only a year and 2 months old when Camden passed away, I feel that he was still important to my life. When you look at a picture it literally takes you back to the exact moment you took or posed for that picture. It's a gateway to the past that can be cherished for a lifetime, that is, if you can hold onto the 8 by 6 inch piece of paper that leads to the past. There’s a song, “Graduation Day” by Vitamin C that says “Will the past be a shadow that will follow us 'round? Will these memories fade when I leave this town?”. This is relevant to memory because the past is a shadow that follows you around, and you can choose whether or not to bring that shadow into the sunlight and remember, or you can forget all of the things that made you who you are and leave the shadow of good and bad memories in your back
