As humans, we tend to idolize people from all over the world for their remarkable qualities, bravery, actions, skills, leadership or ways of life. These people are often referred to as heroes, whether it is a leader, Superman, or a local community hero, they all share something in common, and it’s not a cape. What makes each of these people heroes? Their extraordinary character traits set them apart from their less noteworthy peers. While there is a myriad of traits that heroes possess, the most significant ones are their bravery, their willingness to ask for help, and their strength to always do what is honorable.
A question often addressed in literature, media, and art, as well as by people themselves. The typical idea of “heroism” tends to bring to mind an image of a superhero or someone who saves many lives, but does being heroic always involve having superpowers or putting yourself in danger to save others? Exploring what makes someone a “hero” in others’ eyes could just mean looking at people who do things that no one else would think or care to. Evaluating what defines a hero in the most basic sense can help to show what being a hero actually
American actor Christopher Reeve once quoted, "A hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles" (Brainy Quote). Not only did he play a hero as Superman, he truly became one in his personal life. After becoming a quadriplegic Reeve became a spokesperson for people with spinal cord injuries. A hero is a person one admires because of the qualities and selfless actions they exemplify to overcome adversity and inspire others. Heroism is apparent in literature, history, and in our own life.
Many people would describe a hero to be someone with a cape on their back saving the world from its terrors, but let's face it that isn’t reality. A hero is a person of any race, upbringing, wealth income, age, and so forth that has a good heart and does deeds purely for the help of others rather than the show of it. An example of this would be Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and Darry Curtis from the so called “hood” in a gang called the Greasers. Although they all have been through a lot and seen a lot in their years of living this has definitely shaped their minds and hearts on their actions. All in all, these young men have proven throughout the chapters one through six that they have these characteristics fit to be a hero.
Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.
A hero makes people better. It doesn’t take a lot for a person to be considered a hero. If a person works hard, motivate people to do their best, and is involved in their community, they are considered a hero. Every hero should have an positive impact on a person

To me, however, the definition of a hero is a person who fights for what is right and never gives up, despite the obstacles.
You may define a hero as someone with supernatural capabilities. Superman is a hero; he can fly, see through walls, and lift things with ease. You may define a hero as someone strong in your family that works as a firefighter or a police officer. The dictionary definition of a hero would be a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). A hero to me has two meanings.
When people think of a hero, a tall buff male with supernatural strength who beats up villains comes to mind. But not all heroes are like that. Superman, Mahatma Gandhi, Veronika Scott, and Ponyboy Curtis are all heroes. Superman is the only hero that fits that category. Superman is an archetypical hero, a hero in books and movies that fights villains with supernatural powers.
What is a hero? The definition of hero is; “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.” Many people have different definitions of a hero, some people see them as that one person who you never see, who hides in the shadows and you would never think of them as a hero. However, he/she could be someone who is always out there looking to protect someone. Most people put heroes in categories such as; rich, famous, caring, and selfless and most of all, brave.
