In order for something to be beautiful it must bring pleasure to at least one of the five senses. Whether it’s the scent of a nice perfume, the view of a mountain range, or the splendid taste of some stuffed-crust pizza, one would be hard-pressed to find anything short of beauty in them. Someone or something’s beauty is not universal. What one person thinks is a beautiful, delicious pot of Brussel sprouts, another would look at as an affront to mankind. Far from beauty, the latter person would see ugliness. A person’s personality can be construed in the same way. One such label is linked to weight. Although America is famous for cheeseburgers and laziness, heavier people are often looked down upon. Rather than giving hefty people encouragement to lose weight for reasons concerning their health, people with ugly personalities have the tendency to demean overweight people. This sometimes leads to anorexia, which only makes the person even unhealthier. Branding our citizens’ beauty in this way is clearly not the answer, however it is too often our culture’s response.
