What does it actually mean to be “smart?” According to the dictionary, smart is defined as, “having or showing a quick-witted intelligence.” There are many factors that go into being smart such as, getting good grades in school, or having common sense. Getting good grades is great but do you have common sense to survive out in the real world? Being book smart and having good grades is not a way to judge if someone has common sense as show by my cousin. People tend to think that if someone has good grades and does well in school they are a “smart” person. Well what people do not realize is, there is much more to consider when judging whether someone is smart or not. One of those people that lack common sense is my cousin, Paige. She is very intelligent when it comes to school work. She always has straight A’s. She brags all the time how she never studies for tests and quizzes and she manages to get A’s on them. As a second grader she had all 50 states and several facts about each state memorized. Paige was always asking for books and activity books that had to deal with school based subjects because she found them so entertaining and enjoyable. She is easily one of the top students in her class. Everyone is always calling her smart and intelligent. The one thing they do not see outside of school is some of the common sense that she does not have. I still remember the day I was sitting at her house watching a movie with her and she went to go make popcorn. Next thing I knew, I smelt something burning. Come to find out, Paige put the package of popcorn, in the package still, in the microwave and pushed start. I could not believe she did that. That to me is common sense not to put popcorn in the package in the microwave. Let alone plastic in the microwave period. Another time at one of our cousins birthday party she got some taco salad to eat. She thought she had put some sour cream on it but come to find out, she had put chip dip on it. Common sense tells me to look at the container of food before you go to it on your food. Would you not think that someone who receives straight A’s and is
