The setting of this novel, The Cellar, by Natasha Preston, is set in a town in England during the year 2009. This novel takes place in a small town a few hours away from London. There is a dark atmosphere surrounding this commutative town as more prostitutes and homeless people disappear. The mood in the novel is fear, there is no telling what could happen next. This mood develops through the entire story as the torture gets worse.
The protagonist and main character is Summer Robinson. She is a 16 year old girl with long, blonde hair and green eyes. Her mental state through the whole novel was very determined to get out, and also very courageous for never giving up on her freedom. A quote that describes her is, “He’ll find me”(43). man. In the beginning the antagonist, Clover, kidnaps summer to be part of his ‘perfect’family. Later on he then rapes her because he ‘loved’ her. “‘When he falls in love with you, he will want to make love to you’”(17). Clover holds her captive for about seven months before the police come and save her. Although before the police arrive he tries to kill all of them, so they can be together forever. “He was going to kill us, all of us”(308). This quote shows how much more insane and delusional he had become throughout the entire novel. The resolution of the conflict is when the police finally find and save them. Summer and Becca, a while later, place flowers on their friend’s graves and Summer apologizes for not being there and not being able to save them. They then go home to their friends and family and have a BBQ for Summer to feel the sun on her skin and the feeling of freedom. She starts adjusting back into her regular life with help from Becca and Lewis. The moral of this novel is, live life to the fullest because it can easily be taken away.
