In my experience nothing, nothing at all feels better than the feelings after you have just volunteered your time or donated something to help someone. The feeling of making someone’s day and observing the bright smile on their face definitely makes me happy. Also with my experience, doing things I want to do is what makes me happy. Happiness is associated with the notion of feeling good, the avoidance of pain and the pursuit of pleasure. The pursuit of happiness has been an ancient tradition in which we believe that the only way to achieve a good life is to be happy. I personally believe that happiness comes from being kind to one another, having good company, a job that we will enjoy, making others smile and just simply helping out one another. I also believe that happiness is based on how one perceives life. For example, negative people such as people who are close-minded or pessimistic will have a negative outlook on life while people who are more optimistic and open-minded have a more positive attitude towards life.

Individuals display their happiness in countless ways, could be having someone to speak to on good and bad times, happy relationships, passing an exam, having your loved ones alive and healthy can be happiness to you the list goes on. It all comes down in the way you view things in life. In my opinion it is about the energy you display or attract. Happy people are more open and easier to approach in public. Additionally, as Susan David states, “In some cases, they even help broaden how we think and act by directing our attention to new information and opportunities” (David 124). By being happy, one is more likely to listen to other people to learn the way they think or feel about a certain thing. Someone is even more likely to accept what is said or even start to feel that way about that particular topic as well. Happiness has other benefits as well.

For adults, happiness requires more calculation and reasoning which agrees with both my definition and Aristotle’s definition of happiness. The happiness experienced by adults is more sophisticated. Adults tend to make themselves happy with what they have. Dan Gilbert, a Harvard psychologist and happiness expert, calls this synthetic happiness. He defines synthetic happiness as, “what we make when we don’t get what we wanted.”
