What exactly is a hero? That is one of the most complicated questions to answer. Many people have different answers. This is because the definition of a hero can be different to everybody. When someone thinks of a hero, an image pops into their head. However, the image is not the same for everybody. A hero is someone who is selfless, is like Mulan, and is not a coward. Firstly, a hero is someone who is selfless. Meghan Vogel, someone who is considered a hero by most said “On the last lap, the girl in front of me stumbled and fell. When I realized she couldn’t make it, I helped her to the finish line” (Springboard 76). This shows that she is selfless because she gave up getting a good place in the race to help someone. Debi Mazar also once said “A hero is someone selfless, who is generous in spirit, and who just tries to give back as much as possible to help” (Mazar). People who are selfless are people who put others before themselves, which is what really defines a hero. She also said “A hero to me is someone who saves people and who really deeply cares” (Mazar). In the story Odysseus in the Springboard book, Odysseus was a brave hero who risked his life to get food for him and his starving men. This is because Odysseus didn’t want his men to starve, so rather than not doing anything about it, he was brave and didn 't let his men go hungry. Someone said to “remember that bravery is not the lack of fear, but the ability to move forward in spite of it” (Unknown). This means that being brave doesn’t mean not being afraid, it means being able to overcome fear. Paulo Coelho said “Be brave. Take risks. Nothing can substitute experience” (Coelho).
