They say love is pure, sweet, and something that you can never forget. You feel as if your whole world was turned upside down, and you seem to do things so foolish because of it. It is the greatest feeling the universe gives you. Although they refuse to tell you of the longing, terror, or the pain of it. It is nothing other than a burden, a nightmare which I wish to awaken from.
Every day, we hear the term ‘love’ in several different situations. So, what is love? According to Shakespeare, in sonnet 116 - The first quatrain describes love as an unchangeable force in the lines “Love is not love / Which alters when it alteration finds, / Or bends with the remover to remove: / O no! it is an ever-fixed mark.” Shakespeare enforces the fact that true love always perseveres, no matter what it’s up against by using the metaphor, “That looks on tempests and is never shaken” in the second quatrain.
Deep, intense, and long-lasting individuals use love to express their true emotions. Love is the passionate affection and desire felt by lovers for each other. While love can be so powerful, it is also demanding. Love is unique, love is special. Whether it is the impacts, love and an addiction both have on the body to how they change a person or to how they make a person feel, love is an addiction.
What is love? According to “Oxford Languages,” love is defined as an intense feeling of deep affection. However in “Love’s Vocabulary,” by Diane Ackerman love can't be put into one definition, it means a lot of things and it varies from person to person, love is intangible. By looking at the literary works, Ethan Frome, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, and “Sonnet 71” we, similarly, can see how they all further support Ackerman’s point of view on love in the essay “Love’s Vocabulary,” by defining love as tragic, despairing, depressing, and arduous.
The idea of love is multifaceted and cannot be encapsulated by a single definition. It is considered to be both a universal concept and a personal experience or emotion. Love has been a topic of philosophical discourse dating back to ancient Greece. Simon May brings forth Socrates’ theory of what he thought love was in his book Love a History (2011) stating that love is “What we lack,” and “I [Socrates] find beautiful or good in what I lack” (46). Socrates’ definition of love can be seen as quite simple for something as complex as “love”, that: love is a desire for what we yet don't possess.
