There are many ways for people to determine whether certain texts are meaningful or not. One type of writing that is commonly associated with being meaningful is poetry.
Poetry as defined from Webster’s Dictionary is the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts. That definition does not only describe how Nikki Grimes writes her poems, but the poetry written in her novel Bronx Masquerade. Tyrone Bittings never liked school, his friends were the only thing keeping him there. Poetry is an important part of literature which conveys an author 's ideas across to the reader through the use of descriptive language. Poetry helps an author to express their inner emotions and often incorporates various poetic devices which enriches the text. Poetry gives the reader a different perspective and when read closely, can give the audience a look into the authors imagination. Likewise, poetic devices enhance the writing and can drastically change the mood of the poem, as well as, how the reader interprets the poem. Poetic devices are important in literature because they help to convey a message, add spontaneity to a poem, and give the reader a strong visual.
This allows the audience to feel what the poet is feeling when writing the poem. A poet should be able to create a story that not only states what happens but also provides a deeper meaning that unfolds an underlying storyline. Most people think that poetry is just a few lines that rhyme. On the contrary, poetry is the expression of feelings and emotions put on paper through words. It can be humorous or humbling, light and joyful, or dark and heavy. It simply is whatever the poet is experiencing. It can be in the use of the iambic pentameter, or it can be free verse.
Throughout WWII, the US, Germany, the Soviet Union, and Japan were in an arms race for an advantage in the war through an atomic bomb. The US had developed the atomic bomb first throughout the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was a secret project that FDR started after Einstein sent him a letter warning the US that Germany was developing a nuclear weapon in 1939. On July 16, 1945, the atomic bomb developed throughout the Manhattan project was successful in the test run at Alamogordo, NM. At this time, the Germans had already surrendered to the Allies, and the war with the Japanese was extremely deadly on both sides.

Sometimes one reads a poem and it makes no sense. Reading a poem can be challenging, especially in a fast paced culture like ours, because a poem needs time. In a poem, the poet does not reveal the meaning that is behind his words immediately but rather brings the reader on a journey through images, metaphors and style. Poets express sentiments or paint a picture on a page and invite the reader to experience their own feelings and emotions also.
Poetry is a piece of literature where the author shares his ideas of a subject or person. He is attempting to allow the reader an understanding of his feelings regarding this subject. Most of the time poetry can be very pleasing to the ear; however, at times it can be written in a manner that is odd. There are two things specifically to me that help a writer hide the true meaning of the piece, and that is symbolism and figurative language. Symbolism is so important in poetry because it allows the writer to tell a story without outright saying it. Symbolism helps hide the true meaning, however figurative language helps the reader get a better understanding of what the author is describing.
“Poetry is ordinary language raised to the Nth power. Poetry is bonded with ideas, nerved and blooded with emotions, all held together by the delicate, tough skin of words,”(Paul Engle). Poetry covers all spectrums of life, whether it encompasses morality, love, death, or finding ones true self. When reading poetry one may stumble across pure brilliance, words so powerful they have the ability challenge the mind. Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman have that such gift, and are nothing short of illustrious.
Poems are short meaningful pieces of literature that can be interpreted in multiple ways depending upon the reader at hand. That is what makes a poem unique compared to other literature pieces because in a poem the author tends to use figurative language to fulfill meaning behind their work. One poem “Love is a Sickness Full of Woes” by Samuel Daniel describes the pains of being lovesick. Love can either benefit us if nurtured and cared for, but if not tended to then let loose can ultimately hurt us. As to another poem “American Solitude” by Grace Schulman describes a life of solitude being most warming to the soul to ward off loneliness.
Modern poetry is in open form and free verse. It is pessimistic in tone, portraying loss in faith and psychological struggle which is quite different from the fixed forms and meters of traditional poetry. Secondly, modern poetry is fragmented in nature, containing juxtaposition, inter-textuality and allusion. It has no proper beginning, middle or end. Thirdly, modern poetry is predominantly intellectual in its appeal, rather than emotive.
