Most of us have heard be compassionate towards others such as family, friends and strangers, but do we really know the true meaning? When I was growing up, I was told to be compassionate to others even if they were strangers. However, I never truly understood the meaning of compassion. I also never understood why I felt pity for individuals I didn’t care about. “The meaning of compassion is recognizing the suffering of others, then taking action to help. Compassion is the sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a desire to alleviate it.” The meaning of compassion can be expressed in many ways not just associating with suffering. My circles of compassion show that I feel more compassion for people and animals that I see on a daily basis.
In my concentric circles of compassion my family, friends, and pets are presented in the center circle. They are presented in my circles of compassion because they are important to me and they are an emotional response. I feel compassionate to them because I associate with them on a daily basis. They also support and care about me and my success. Whenever life becomes difficult, these individuals make me feel warm, safe and loved. The individuals presented is my step mom, dad and cousins. They are presented in my circle of compassion because they have an emotional response to me. This part of my family doesn’t support anything I do, they mostly care about themselves. They are my parents and I have to tolerate them even if I don’t like it. These people tend to not understand how I feel. I don’t feel loved or safe when I am around them. My parents make me feel pity when I’m with them.
