What does it mean to be “free”? Freedom is where you have the ability to do whatever you want without the restraint of others. Achieving freedom was the desire and goal that colonists and revolutionaries pursued throughout the Revolutionary War and many believed was a god given right to man. But the desire for freedom came with its and struggles and freedom did not come easy. In fact, many were not willing to fight for freedom due their fear of British government and their rule over the colonies.
Michael Moores documentary “Bowling for Columbine” and George Orwell's novel “1984” both use fear as a method of media manipulation throughout both the documentary and novel. They use the fear of media manipulation to support their meaning behind Bowling for Columbine and 1984. Unquestionably Michael Moore and George Orwell both use various amounts of media manipulation to fear their audience. To start off, in the novel “1984”, George Orwell shows media manipulation throughout the entire book because whatever the government says, the people most likely will believe. For example when Winston first got taken by the thought police he hated Big Brother, but after being there for a while they manipulated him into loving Big Brother.
Freedom is the power that allows people to self-determine his or her ideas, it allows people to have the right to act, speak or think without being restraint. The reality of freedom is how individuals see their freedom; for instance, Dr. King got locked in jail for describing his freedom, but others define his freedom differently. Individuals choices, how they want to establish their freedom. One’s person freedom could be someone’s prison. Although people defined that freedom is having unrestricted rights, but limitation create true freedom since it spreads equality to everyone.
“When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in he has no choice but to become an outlaw.” Freedom means different things to different people. For some people, it means you have the freedom to go for a walk without getting the police called on you. For some it may mean practicing the religion they choose, or where they work or live.
