There is no true definition of a father, it is much deeper than just a male parent. A father is not someone who believes that by creating you, he has done his duty in life and does not have any responsibilities. A father is someone who gets up every day to put a roof over your head, making sure there are clothes on your back and putting food on the table. He is emotionally available, supporting you and showing his love for you. He will help you, whether it be for school, teaching you how to parallel park or even someone to just talk to. He teaches the value of hard work, how to treat others well (including women), and how a father should be.

According to sociologist Arlie Hochschild, author of the article “The Second Shift: Employed Women Are Putting in Another Day of Work at Home”, women are adapting to going to work then coming home to be a mother, but some fathers go to work and do not contribute to the household or child care. “The women I interviewed seemed to be far more deeply torn between the demands of work and family than were their husbands”, Hochschild writes, “They felt the second shift was their issue, and most of their husbands agreed” (Hochschild 146). Hochschild also writes about interviewing 52 couples and asking the men if they help with the household chores and expectations. “the majority did not share the load at home. Some refused outright. Others refused more passively, often offering a loving shoulder to lean on, or an understanding ear, as their working wife faced the conflict they both saw as hers” (Hochschild 146). He also states that couples who share housework and child work are more happier. In the article “I Want a Wife”, written by women's activist Judy Brady, she writes about being a wife and a mother and how she wishes she had a wife to take care of everything. “I want a wife who will keep my house clean. I want a wife who will pick up after my children, a wife who will pick up after me” (Brady 150). She writes in a view of a man, a father and a husband and how women should be taking care of everything. I believe …show more content…

Being a father and being there for the family and children is a major role in the way they grow up. According to the article, “Fathers’ influence in the lives of children with adolescent mothers” written by National Fatherhood Initiative, they examined father involvement of 134 children of adolescent mothers over 10 years and found the father-child contact was associated with better emotional and academic functioning. “The results indicated that children with more involved fathers experienced fewer behavioral problems and scored higher on reading achievement. This study showed the significance of the role of fathers in the lives of at-risk children, even in case of nonresident fathers” (NFI). Being a father, your children will look up to you and if you are not truly there, your children may pay for it later in life. According to the article “Eminem is Right”, written by researcher Mary Eberstadt, she writes about numerous rappers that have been in trouble with the law and grew up without a father which made some of the biggest records for them. Take Tupac Shakur, he wrote a song called “Papa’z Song Lyrics” in which explains how it is to grow up fatherless (Eberstadt 178). I believe men need to step up and be there for the children and be a role model in their life. An impact from one's own parents help determine their future. What kind of man creates a child, but is not there for the child? What kind of father is
