In “This is Water,” the author, David Foster Wallace, argues that the interpretation of life is a conscious and intentional decision, only learning by being aware of exercising and taking control of how one thinks. My father is constantly there for me and I can’t imagine my life without him. He supports me financially, emotionally and I always feel protected and loved. He immediately took on the responsibility of finishing high school, being a father, and obtaining a job so he could support us. From time to time, many stories are forgotten because the lesson behind them are no longer related to the modern times. However, King Lear had been around for nearly 400 years. In other words, King Lear’s message is still very relevance to today. Upon giving the kingdom to his daughters, King Lear asked her daughters, Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia, to tell him who loves him the most. Goneril claimed her love for him is “more than words can wield the matter,” and she loves him more than anything.
Unique humans are like oceans, endless, deep, mystifying. When one begins to describe a unique human, they start with something like their personal preferences or things that have occurred in their life that has changed them into the wonderful, unique person that they are. One such unique human such as Hannah “Go-deen-ez” may be an applicable example. On the surface, As far as personal preferences, she has an abundance. The audience sympathise with King Lear’s redemption. Throughout the play, he gets a chance at redemption to make up for his mistake of having “thy truth being the dower:” for his daughter. He realises the folly of his actions and redeems himself stating “I am a very foolish fond old man”. This demonstrates King Lear's change in character as he learns that he is not as powerful as thinks he was and starts to become more humble. There is a lure of sympathy for King Lear because a story of redemption inspires people and catches their imagination, that anything is possible.
The construction of the Fools character within act I, scene iv is done with the purpose to mock and tease King Lear for his recent actions. The Fool, being upset over Cordelia’s banishment, decides to heavily ridicule the king for his foolish behaviour. The portrayal of the Fool is cunning and clever to make it appear that King Lear is the real fool in the situation. The Fool scrutinizes the king in almost every facet of his life: such as his daughters, his power, and his brains. The Fool is characterized as a man of truth and does not intend to humor the king, rather, he wished to wipe away the facade the king lives behind and presents the ugly truth.
In this essay I want to show that in the first act of King Lear it was already hinted at some points of the development that the characters of King Lear and the Earl of Gloucester go through. The character Lear shows signs that he is becoming mad while it begins to affect his life and those of the other characters in the play . It is often said that the opening scene or chapter of a drama sets the stage for the major themes that the reader will see throughout the book or play. This theory is proven to be true in William Shakespeare’s King Lear. The first scene in act one helped to introduce some of the themes that would be seen throughout the rest of the play like the idea of madness, reconciliation and the idea of authority versus chaos. One major theme was reconciliation. In the very beginning when Lear was asking his daughter how much they all loved him, Cordelia couldn’t come up with the right words to say that would express her feeling for her father and accused her sister of exaggerating their love for him.
