As the new CEO of Delta Phi Corporation, who has been advised by the Board of Directors that I need to strategize the next decade of the company, I would look at both Porter’s and Mintzberg’s approaches to developing a strategy for the next decade. In order to strategize for the next decade, it is important to understand what the differences are between each approach. There seems to be one key difference in the two strategies. “deliberate strategy is a top down approach to strategic planning that emphasize on achieving an intended business objective whereas emergent strategy is the process of identifying unforeseen outcomes from the execution of strategy and then learning to incorporate those unexpected outcomes into future corporate plans by taking a bottom up approach to management” (Dili, 2017). With emergent strategy, he states that the strategic plan for a company emerges over a period of time as “intentions collide with and accommodate a changing reality” (Moore). I think that as a new CEO it could be beneficial to use some of both approaches. By using Porter’s 5 forces analysis assess the need for your products, how trends affected the company in the past, which products would be beneficial to the company to look at getting into and how the company can best position itself for success in the industry. In contrast, by taking Mintzberg’s 5 P’s of strategy which consist of plan, ploy, pattern, position and perspective will also be beneficial when planning strategy for the company. By using Porter’s three generic strategies of cost leadership, differentiation and focus, would be beneficial on the financial side of the company in looking at how the company will fair financially over the next decade. Then it would be beneficial as the CEO to look at Mintzberg’s five P’s to help determine the what position the company is currently in in the competitive market and what the strength of the position in the market we are looking to
