Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Community Service on January 13th 1913 on the campus of Howard University by 22 collegiate women previous members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. left the organization after wanting to change the direction of the sorority including the name, colors, motto, creed, and the shield. These 22 women wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to those in need. After the idea was rejected by Graduate chapter member Nellie Quander and other graduate members they reorganized under their own sorority known as Delta Sigma Theta. The next came in 1941 it became the first sorority to provide a program of employment counseling and career development for black women and in 1955 Forward Thrust program promoted educational and economic development, political involvement, international awareness, and physical and mental health. The Organizations more recent programs have included a partnership with Habitat for Humanity to build homes in the United States and Africa it raises international awareness of Kenya Mary Help of Sick Mission located in Kenya, Delta Sigma Theta had concerns about the prenatal and maternal care for women in Africa and in 1955 establish a maternity wing for women in Thika Town and it later became the first hospital to open after Kenya Gained its Independence. This process serves as a blueprint to address all aspects of personal finances and teaches participates about the outcomes of good money management. Smart Women Finish Rich is another initiative as well. They also have expanded their activities by creating the EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) this program was set in place to tackle the issues of being a African American Male these include STEM education, culture, self-efficacy, leadership, physical and mental health, healthy lifestyles choices, character, ethics, relationships, college readiness, fiscal management, civic engagement and service learning. Delta Days in the Nation’s Capital and at the United Nations are ways the sorority promotes political awareness. Delta Sigma Theta is also known for its annual “Jabberwock” social event, which dates to 1925 and generally combines cultural expression with talents to raise money for graduating
