Demographic shifts, in theory is really just how population change effect society socially, economically, academically, ect. Often enough demographic shifts happen and are often very apparent and easy to analyze. One industry demographic shifts often effect is retailing, something small like a change in the average age puberty start or in cultural appropriation can easily change what stores or companies are thriving and which aren’t. In this short reflection I will discuss how change in the make up of the average household has shifted and how it has effected our contemporary society. The American household has been shifting many different directions throughout the past century. Single parent households have become acceptable, stay at home husbands have become more common, people are getting married later, the traditional family structure has changed and the amount of people having children is decreasing. The changes previously listed are just a few changes in the American household. These changes have affected retailers because it has curved consumption of certain items. On one hand this shift will allow an industry for adult friendly activities to flourish. We are currently seeing this with increasing in the popularity of activities like pole dancing and wine and canvas class because they either don’t have kids, their older or their family is more flexible. One the other hand it eliminates the entire industry for children which can ruin some stores because children may be the foundation of there sales, like the Disney store or Children’s place. In my opinion the best way for retailers to flourish during this demographic shift is to diversify what they offer. They shouldn’t stick to tradition; they should try to approach every angle possible in order to optimize
