Through reading and poetry children experience the world of literature. Children have the opportunity to explore new adventurous worlds along with expanding their knowledge of vocabulary, literary devices and different writing styles. Reading provides an outlet for children and time to escape their everyday lives. Like the quote states reading takes us away from our “homes” into a whole new world. Not all children enjoy reading but it is important to provide enjoyable opportunities for children. Dennis Lee provided these opportunities to children through his books and poems over the decades making him a popular house hold name. Dennis lee was born August 31, 1939 in Toronto, Ontario (Web, H. He has made many contributions into the literary world we know today. Dennis lee’s poems are interesting and each poem is different. His poems also look at topics that may not normally be addressed. The poem’s where completed to reach children in a personal way by writing about themes the children could relate to. For example in alligator pie he talks about food and objects familiar to children. His poems also encourage free play, which all children should be exposed to. Not only did Dennis write for the children but he also reached adults and wrote the theme song for the popular show the fraggels. These poems reached the children in a positive way and therefore had a positive influence on children’s literature. He contributed many poems that are important to share with
