Young girls are becoming obsessed with how they look. Many times this self image is presented in a negative way. In turn, society is starting to gain a self-image problem. Social media and the users are putting too much pressure on girls to look a certain way, therefore affecting many young girl’s self-esteem. Studies show, that this can lead to depression and eating disorders. Many people don't realize that kids can get depressed too, they only think that depression is something adults are capable of having; the truth is- kids can become depressed too and something that has a such a big impact on that is social media. Depression can become very dangerous and can lead to suicide if the person does not get help like the college student in the article by Catherine Thorbecke, “ In the weeks before her suicide death, on all of Holleran's social media platforms, she seemed to be a happy, healthy, college student, and showed no signs of her battle with depression in her curated online presence. no one knew what was going according to her social media accounts”(Thorbecke). Between the ages of 12-20 and something that has a such a big impact on that is social media. "My sophomore year I struggled with anxiety and depression and social media was definitely a trigger for that because ... I was always looking at everyone else's trying to understand why were they so happy and why was I not," (Thorbecke). Girls look up to all of these famous actresses,singers, and reality stars and begin to realize that they don't have the same exact body as them.
