“Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest.”
Depression is a big deal in today’s society because more and more youth suffer from it yet cannot speak up. I feel that in a world that’s forever changing and people becoming more and more dependant on artificial intelligence, there has been more pressure on the youth of today to step up and keep up. There are more demands on a teenager today, and the more the demands, the more the pressure, and the more the pressure, the more consuming depression becomes.
Depression feels like an endless pit, like a black hole that engulfs happiness. People that are depressed rarely show any signs of depression. Self-harm is a “red flag” kind of symptom. Other symptoms include; Insomnia, lack of energy, reduced appetite, anxiety, and frequent thoughts of death.

The most common factors are bullying at school, domestic abuse, and cyber bully. Other influencing factors can be low self-esteem, traumatic events such as the death of a close relative or loved one, certain medications, a break-up or drug and alcohol abuse.
Social media plays a huge role in our “childhood” – well, our adolescent years. If I’m not on Instagram, I’m updating my status on Whatsapp, or watching a funny video on the 9gag Facebook page. According to thetelegraph.co.uk an average teenager spends 27 hours on the internet a week. It’s no secret that the internet can be very good, yet very dangerous at the same time. But during my time browsing through Instagram I come across countless profiles where I see drop dead gorgeous girls with layers and layers of make-up, and I’d think to myself “wow, if only I looked like her”. The problem is that girls often “compare peoples highlight reel with our behind the scenes”. This leads to many self-esteem issues within me and I’d often feel like I’m not good
