“People think depression is sadness. People think depression is crying. People think depression is dressing in black. But people are wrong. Depression is the constant feeling of being numb. Being numb to emotions, being numb to life. You wake up in the morning just to go back to bed again.”(Clark). Depression is more than just sadness or a low mood. It is a mood disorder, a state of feeling depressed, or sad for long periods of time, not a couple of days. It affects the person’s mood, sleep, behavior, concentration, appetite, activity levels, the views they have of oneself, energy level, loss of interest in activities, and can give them suicidal thoughts or actions which is more common in children and adolescents than the elderly. College students with depression often find it hard to finish their work for class or even show up to class. In two year and four year colleges, “30 percent of college students reported feeling ‘so depressed that it was difficult to function’ at some time in the past year”(Saringo-Rodriguez). Depression causes college students to have serious academic problems. When it comes to college and the way it is set up, some students do not show up to classes. In some colleges, professors do not really care if students show up or not. Not all professors ask them about why they are not in class. College students with depression often miss class because they find it hard to get up and go to class on a daily basis. They may skip their classes, which can cause them to have problems with their grades. They can fall behind quickly and it becomes hard to catch up in college because it moves at a faster rate than high school classes. It is hard for students with depression to focus on school work, which makes it hard for them to care about how they are doing in school. It causes their grades to drop or can cause the depressive to dropout of college. On top of academic problems, college students have issues with financial burdens, which can cause them to become extremely sad and can cause their depression to become worse. People who work often become stressed from time to time, but people with depression can be affected severely by work stress. “Stress and conflict in the workplace can contribute to depression”(Bilsker). A depressive can become stressed due to a high work demand. They may have a long lists of tasks that seem undoable or they become frustrated because they have difficulties doing simple tasks. “Depression can make it difficult for an individual to perform their job, affecting concentration, decision-making, and interactions with others”(Bilsker). They can also become burdened due to being forced to work at a faster rate than normal which can allow them to become stressed. The depressives also have issues where they find it hard to make adjustments to help with stress at work. Work stress has been linked to depression in recent research documents stated by Debra Lerner in the American Journal of Health Promotion. Other problems in the workplace can consist of problems with co-workers. Employees with depression can become irritable due to antidepressants or simply their depression, which can cause them to snap at coworkers and even customers causing other work related stress. They can also have problems snapping at coworkers when things are moving too fast for the depressive and the stress gets to them.
