Throughout Poe’s life and in The Raven there are themes of loneliness, depression, and mourning. Loneliness representing Poe losing multiple female role models in his life, Depression representing his Adoptive father leaving him out of his will. Do to all this mourn and grief. In The Raven loneliness is shown by Poe missing Lenore and not knowing how to cope without her. Depression is shown by Poe sitting in a dark room all alone with no one to talk to and nothing to do to pass time but read to try to forget about Lenore. He is unsure on how to go out and be happy without Lenore. So when someone comes knocking at his door it takes him a moment to react to what is happening, therefore he claims he was napping and that the knocking was too light to hear, but when he goes to the door there is no one there. The knocking continues so he comes to the conclusion that it must be something at his window.
