Depression In 'To This Day And Me Before You'

Depression is something that many people are currently struggling with, though it is a mental illness, it can lead to tragic events. Many things can influence depression on a person. The poem To This Day by Shane Koyczan and the book Me Before You by Jojo Moyes both touch on the topic of influencing depression. Both texts talk about how others can influence depression and suicide.

Firstly, people do not know the daily struggles of other individuals, or how someone may feel in their current living condition, but it is human nature to assume many things from first impressions alone. When people are called rude slurs or nicknames, it offends others and drops egos. Similarly, when people aren’t given a choice on the matter, it seems like their own life is spiraling out of their hands. These situations are things that people with depression experience a lot. Shane Koyczan said in his poem, “I’m not the only kid who grew up this way surrounded by people who used to say that rhyme about sticks and stones” ( To This Day ) and that is because although, sticks and stones may break bones, names will definitely hurt. As much as people may think otherwise, names that people call each other stick to their brains, and the worse part is that the brain keeps recollecting those cruel words. Similarly, in the book Me Before You, after a horse race, Will says to Lou “You decided what you thought you'd like me to do, and you went ahead and did it. You did what everyone else does. You decided for me” ( William Traynor, Me Before You ). When Lou decides to take Will to a horse race, she didn’t bother to ask if he likes horse races. At the place of the race, everything turns downhill and because of Will’s disability, he has to be carried through muck and dirt back and forth from the stadium to the car.
