Depression, persistent sadness and a lack of interest or pleasure in previously rewarding or enjoyable activities (Sawchuk, 2022). The book We Were Liars by E. Lockhart tells the story of the Sinclair family who lives on a private island off the coast of Massachusetts during the summer months. Focusing on the narrator, Cadence Sincair Eastman, who suffers from a head injury which she does not remember, which now leads her to suffer from severe migraines, amnesia, and depression. There are many people in this world that suffer not only from depression but lots of other mental illnesses. People with depression tend to live their lives differently than others, and Cadence shows that in the book. As stated before, one of the conditions that Cadence suffers from is depression which affects her life differently than everyone else's. One of many symptoms that teens have can be pain of some sort. In an article titled “Teen Depression” it states, “Complaints of pain, including headaches…” (Fulghum, 2022). Cadence does also suffer from migraines, which could also be a factor to her having depression. In the book We Were Liars, Cadence states, “It is true I suffer migraines since my accident” (Lockhart, 2014, pg. 2). Cadence doesn’t not know what her accident was, and no one will tell her because doctors are afraid that if she knows about the incident her depression will worsen.
