How much can a person handle? When is it too much? Too much suffering, too much grief? Young lost teenage souls are wandering around, seeking for help, but without response. Between 500,000 and 1 million young people commit suicide each year and 24% of High School students have seriously considered it. Depression is a frequent but serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working. Depression, even in the most severe cases, can be treated. The earlier that treatment can begin, the more efficient it is. The majority of teenagers go directly into drinking and smoking, which normally does not turn out well. My first example is from last year when my friend got excessively drunk at a party. She had been dealing with depression since she was 13, and she sometimes relied on alcohol to soothe her problems. While partying, she decided to drown her problems in alcohol, which concluded horribly. Many other kids ended up drunk too, but in spite of their reasons, my friend was not drinking to seem cool but to cope with her depression. Another way teenagers handle depression is by self-injuring; not only in a physical way but also psychologically. When someone talks carelessly about themselves, they might not even realize they are self-harming. Cutting is one of the ways to practice self-harm, and my friend chose to do this. It is a more dangerous and serious way to deal with depression, and it sometimes directly links with suicide thoughts. This way is wistfully common, but unlike drinking, self-harming is viewed as something unacceptable. The last and one of the most frequent ways of confronting depression is by isolating yourself. My best friend nowadays also used to suffer depression and her way of wrestling it was to confine herself from her friends. The sooner we realize we have a friend or family member suffering from it, the more it will help the person overcome this obstacle. I have never suffered from depression, but that does not mean I will never do, therefore, I would want someone there to help me, as I have been there for others. If we let them alone in their spiral of dark thoughts and harmful substances, it will turn out worse, and it becomes more difficult to overcome. Smoking and drinking have a vital role in depression, and unfortunately, media promote such acts. Showing today’s teenagers a healthy way to confront with this mental problem, will cause them fewer issues.
