Neighborhoods just toward the west and east of downtown Baltimore, including Sandtown-Winchester and stretching out into rural Baltimore County, display high rates of poverty. Those neighborhoods are overwhelmingly black, mirroring a long history of express and verifiable approaches in the locale that yielded abnormal amounts of racial and monetary isolation. This racial segregation and poverty fixation enable record for stark contrasts between Baltimore 's black and white populaces in key financial results to like instruction, work, and youngster
During World War I, soldiers were promised a ‘bonus payment’ to make up for wages lost while serving in the military- one dollar for each day served on U.S. soil and one dollar and twenty-five cents for every day served overseas. However, the Bonus would not be paid until 1945. Veterans initially agreed, based on the healthy state of the economy (Keaney 1). The Great Depression came and made thousands of veterans unemployed, like most Americans at the time. The veterans felt that their bonus should be paid early so that they could provide food and shelter for themselves and their families (Rank and File Committee 1).
The Hellhole of Andersonville Andersonville, or Camp Sumter, stands out as the worst of the prisoner-of-war camps on either side in the American Civil War. The pressures on the South during the American Civil War created an environment in Andersonville that resulted in a large number of deaths. Prisoners were decimated by disease, dehydration, starvation, overpopulation, and execution during the fourteen months of Andersonville’s existence. It was one of the largest camps during the Civil War holding 45,000 or more prisoners.
This month I am privileged to share an exclusive look into the life of Sandra Gathers, who I find to be extremely passionate and dedicated to all aspects of her life. Along with 3 sisters, Sandra was born and raised in Eutawville, SC. Most people are usually surprised to learn that she was raised on a working farm. Even though she had to work very hard as a young girl, it shaped the work ethics that she encompasses to this day. Sandra graduated from Holly Hill High where she was a member of the beta club, yearbook staff and library club.

The House on Mango Street is set in a poor, primarily Hispanic neighborhood. Author Sandra Cisneros creates an atypical, yet easily digestible world for the reader to experience while learning about Esperanza’s childhood. The culture of her environment influences Esperanza’s development as she becomes a young woman, and contributes to the book’s driving theme of self-empowerment. Mango Street is the source of Esperanza’s growth through her childhood, and it hides sadness and longing underneath stereotypes of Hispanic people. The characters that live in the broken-down neighborhood all seem to represent pigeonholed views of Latino individuals.
The music here has much more meaning than any other music out there. Musicians back then worked really hard to get music to where it is today. Without all of the jazz, blues, and soul, music would not be where it is today. Music has always been the roots of this city and it will never change. Memphis has definitely placed a mark on the world that no other city of state could compare
