Campaigns and elections are a fundamental part of the American Government. Representative Democracy is based on the idea that the voices of the majority will be heard in that manner maintain balance of power. The Founding Fathers decided that this form of government would be a balance between anarchy and tyranny. It is important to uphold the popular sovereignty in which the power comes from the people. The American Citizen has a very important role in the election and the campaign process. To vote in an election process is the most direct form of involvement. It is a civil right granted by the Constitution and it is the most powerful method individuals have to influence the policies the government makes and ultimately the candidates in office. It influences or sometimes even changes public opinion which are the beliefs that the people have about issues and leaders. The newspapers, television, radio, internet and social media contribute greatly by the way they present ideas to the American public. The media influences citizens during the election process to vote for or against certain issues. During the campaign process they may reveal information about a candidate that may attract more voters to the polls on Election Day.
