Active transport is when ions or molecules move across a cell membrane into a region of higher concentration than it was in before, they are assisted by enzymes and requiring energy. Active transport explains what happens when a cell uses energy to move something across the cell membrane. Sometimes a cell had to work and use a lot of its energy to keep the correct balance of ions and molecules. Even though active transport is helping keep the cell alive, they can also be stopped. Inhibitors can stop this process. Sometimes the proteins helping keep the cell alive are destroyed and sometimes they are just blocked. The cell would then die. There is another type of transport called passive transport.

Passive transport is a type of transport in which ions or molecules move along a concentration gradient, which means to move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration than it was in before. Since this type of movement is a passive transport it does not require chemical energy. When trying to move a substance across a biological membrane, a passive transport might need a little help from a membrane protein. Active transport needs energy to move along the cells without its energy it will not be able to move the proteins along. Passive transport does not need energy to move the molecules. Although passive transport does use other types of transport to help it like osmosis, diffusion, and facilitated diffusion.
