The atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima marked the end of World War II in 1945. Before and after that point, numerous tests were conducted in remote locations to determine the effects of the bombs. It was the first time any weapon of that magnitude had been used on anyone. Multiple tests had to be conducted in order to perfect the bomb. Bikini Atoll in Micronesia was commonly used as a site to test the effects of the bombs. Scientists would record the results of the bomb, so they knew were they needed to make improvements. Many pictures were taken to document the testing. Underneath the top half of the mushroom cloud, the stem extends all the way to the ground. The rigged vertical lines on either side of it make is stand out more than the rest of the explosion. The base formed by the lines represent power and domination as the explosion grows. The atomic bomb was used as a tool to intimidate the enemy; the thought of the destruction was unknown so no one knew what to expect. The vertical lines that make up the buildings and trees on the shore are soon to be altered by the energy released by the atomic bomb test. The horizontal lines that are formed by the bottom of the cloud are seemingly endless. Other horizontal line is the horizon; it is looming over the rest of the picture. If examined closely, many things can be seen. A few islands can be picked out along with something that represents a boat. The horizon is usually associated with the future, but just like war, it has to end somewhere. What happens next might be unpredictable, but it will eventually be finished.
