Albert W. Florence, the petitioner in this case, was initially arrested in 1998 and charged with use of a deadly weapon and obstruction of justice (Florence v. Board of Chosen Freeholders, Opinion, I). He pled guilty to two lesser counts and was ordered to make monthly payments to cover his fine. However, as stated in the Opinion of the Court, he did not keep up with his payments, and a warrant was issued for his arrest in 2003. Florence paid the rest of his fine only days later. However, when he and his wife were pulled over in Burlington County, New Jersey, in 2005, the state trooper’s computer system still had Florence’s warrant, so he arrested and transported him to Burlington County Detention Center.
Berthoud police officer, Jeremy Yachik, was accused of abusing his 15-year old daughter in the year of 2014. An email received by the Loveland police department included video footage of a man, later identified as Yachik and his daughter, hitting and kicking a young female in 2012 which led to an investigation and later, an arrest. Loveland police investigated the allegations instead of the Berthoud Police department due to Yachik’s ex-fiance claiming that she had emailed the video to Berthoud Police Chief Glen Johnson but Johnson had never responded, thus causing her to continue trying to get help for Yachik’s daughter. The abuse Yachik’s daughter accused was inflicted upon her included being bound with plastic zip ties, being force-fed hot sauce, as well as being choked.

In the early 1800s the punishment of juveniles altered to the notion to rehabilitate juvenile offenders among with separate juveniles from adults in the system, and to keep the juvenile recidivism rate low, therefore the creation of the New York House of Refuge began (ABA Dialogue Program, n.d., p.5). The House of Refuge was the first prison to separate juveniles from adults and “were supposed to provide a home for unruly and troubled children, where they would be reformed, educated, and disciplined (Roberts, 1998, p. 96).” The program did not concentrate on punishment or pain, but on life skills that the juveniles could utilized once released. According to Roberts (1998), “Order, discipline, and moral teachings were emphasized (p.97).” The

A small barren island, surrounded by the frigid waters of the San Francisco Bay is home to some of the most infamous criminals ever known. This island jail is known as Alcatraz. In 1934 many criminals were rising in power, so in order to keep control of them, Alcatraz was built. Three of the most famous inmates at Alcatraz were Frank Morris, and the Anglin brothers. These three men were famous because of their ingenious escape plan.

Transcendentalists were Americans that believed everyone should be treated equally, so they began six major reform movements. There were many Transcendentalist movements, but the six most important reforms were the prison movement, women’s rights, anti-slavery, temperance, insane and education movement. The prison reform movement was started by the Transcendentalists because they felt that the system was wrong unfair and cruel. All prisoners suffered the same consequences regardless of his or her crime.
