Phillip Enright, the protagonist in The Cay, has developed greatly throughout the short novel. In the beginning of the story he was an immature boy who was against black people, but as the story progressed he realized that skin color doesn't matter. As Phillip was becoming mature, his relationship with Timothy became stronger, which was a major change from the beginning. Many of Phillip's actions in the beginning of the story showed that he disliked Timothy. On page forty, while Timothy and Phillip were lying on the raft their bodies touched, and Phillip drew back very fast.
