“Deviant Behaviours”, written by Erich Goode, describes deviance as the violation of social norms that can result in punishment, condemnation or ridicule (Goode, p5). Deviant behaviour is not a simple concept, but the concept can be broken down into numerous terms that can help better illustrate the different forms of deviant behaviour. A few concepts of deviant behaviour which are discussed in Goode’s publication of “Deviant Behaviours” are elaborated through the lyrical content of two artists, “Drugs are good” written by NoFX and “I need Drugs” by Necro. The failure of social control can cause one to become deviant. Direct controls are actions that agents take, which act to ensure that individuals refrain from engaging in deviant behaviour. An example of a failed control theory can be seen through the line, “tried to go to rehab too but couldn't get admitted (Brounstein, 2000).” This is a failure of direct control, if a patient cannot be admitted into rehab then there is no help that can be applied to illuminate the addiction. Stake in Conformity states that some people have less to lose than others if they are caught or punished. Some examples of stakes that could be valued would be college, accomplishments, emotional attachments to others, material possessions, reputation; they may be jeopardized by exposure as a thief, a cheat, liar, a brawler or substance abuser. This concept is presented in the text, “and I'm telling everyone at this N.A. meeting i’m thirty days clean (Brounstein, 2000).” Respectively, if an individual can simply lie to N.A., which is not helping the patient and they are not scared of repercussions, they are continuing to be an addicted drug abuser which is a fail at social control.
