Analysis of Dewey

In the teaching world there is always the debate of “What is the best set up for learning in the classroom?” Well in this paper I will use the theories presented by Dewey to argue that the most beneficial education revolves around diverse social structures. Dewey’s theory backs this up on four contentions. The first is social constructivism which focuses on the social nature of cognition, second is how Education is a social function, third how diversity in the classroom can progress students and society, fourth interactions with others develop democracy and fifth, democracy helps shape us as individuals.

Education utilized as a social function is primarily beneficial to students. It allows them to expand on their opinions and construct knowledge together. This will then eventually lead to the bigger picture of constructing society together. The idea of democracy within this theory helps students understand the idea of working together and using all of their ideas to come up with a stronger consensus. This will promote a more constituted society. The diversity within the classroom, that Dewey says is essential, would allow students to understand the different types of people that exist in their communities and grow respect for those differences. Overall using Dewey’s theory on social constructivism and placing it within the educational system would not only benefit the student but also benefit society by tearing down the walls of resentment and allowing communities to become whole again and together we would be able to progress as a
