There are approximately 350 million individuals living with DM worldwide. In the United States, the rate of T2DM has increased in individuals of AA descent with the prevalence rate escalating in the past 30 years and has quadrupled. AAs above 20 years of age are 1.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with DM than the Caucasians. They accounted for 10.8% of all individual with diabetes (CDC, 2015). A comparison of rates of diagnosis of diabetes mellitus by ethnicity and race disclosed that in 2010 the AAs diagnosed for diabetes were 13.2% of 29.1 million Americans (ADA, 2014).
To answer these questions, I researched each disease and asked each person how they think they got the disease and what they would’ve changed so that never got the disease in the first place. My paternal grandfather had a heart disease and my grandmother had lung cancer. I asked my father how he thinks his parents could’ve prevented their deaths from these diseases and he said my grandmother smoked cigarettes and my grandfather didn’t like to go to the doctor. Simple changes could’ve saved my grandparents life but like I learned in the Escape Fire Documentary even if people know they know how to prevent a disease they are sometimes too stubborn to help themselves. My maternal uncle is 45 and the only person in our family with diabetes type 2, he is a veteran, smokes cigarettes and doesn’t take his medicine correctly which adds to him not being that healthy and his condition getting worst.
I have chosen Celiac disease because I myself suffer from Celiacs. I feel like people don’t really know what Celiacs actually is. Also what are side effects, and what it does to your body. What is diabetes? I’m pretty sure that most of you at least once have heard about this disease, but probably not all of you are familiar to what it really is, how it’s caused and how it can damage human’s health. Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin itself is a hormone needed to allow glucose to enter body cells for energy production.
The immense amount of work I do daily just to function is invisible to most. No one sees the struggle but diabetes Is relentless and demands me to be attentive to it every hour of every day. Diabetes is certainly debilitating, demanding, and draining; however, I have still found positives in my disease. Type 1 Diabetes has given me tremendous strength, motivation to live healthy, a better perspective on life, and purpose to my future. After living 10 years with diabetes, I have learned plenty about how my body does (and unfortunately doesn’t) work and how to keep myself as healthy as possible.
