Chronic illnesses are serious diseases which could last the whole life of the concerned person, affecting the person’s mental, emotional and social wellbeing (Corbin and Strauss, 2013). In order to understand health and illness and the impact of health several assumptions have been.
Being privileged to care for a client with type 2 diabetes mellitus, I was able to observe that though my clients A1 c which was very high at the initial stages, gradually it reduced with the management plan .The deteriorating signs and symptoms which seemed to be progressing rapidly declined. This supports the assumption that the course of chronic condition varies and changes over time.
Self management refers to “the ability of the individual in conjunction with family, community and health care professionals to manage symptoms, treatment life style changes and psychosocial, cultural and spiritual consequence of health condition (Richard and Sheen, 2011). With oral hypoglycemic agents, diet and life style modification, my client’s blood sugar was controlled to near normal. This confirms the assumption that, the course of chronic condition can be shaped and managed.
