AFTER A DIAGNOSIS OF A CHRONIC OR LIFE-LIMITING ILLNESS

Among other experiences that cause an emotional injury to a person is a diagnosis of a chronic or a life limiting illness which is sometimes referred to as a terminal illness. A life limiting illness means that the illness cannot be cured and is likely to cause death within a limited period of time which can be weeks, months or years. A chronic illness may be long-term, not curable but can be managed. Such illnesses include diabetes, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disorders and arthritis. These illnesses mean that some changes in a person’s life will occur as the previously enjoyed good health is lost and one has to contend with the unpredictability of ill health which may interfere with employment and one’s independence. …show more content…

Cry if you can. Sharing your feelings of sadness and fears with someone you are comfortable with may promote your emotional healing.

o Give yourself time and space to digest and take in the bad news.

o Accept your illness and do what you can to cope with it and move on.

o Find as much information as possible about your illness and how to manage it. Knowledge is power.

o Ask your doctor about any available support in your area and what to do to maximize your health.

o Be actively involved in your treatment. Ask questions about treatment options and be willing to explore these.

o Write down what you are worried about and what you want to discuss with your family

o Look after yourself and avoid stressful situations and negative people.
