This report focuses on the implementation of diagnostic interviews based as an assessment method for assessing a student’s mathematical knowledge. The diagnostic interview utilised in this report centres on the mathematical concept of place value and the base ten number system. This report is segregated into two parts. 2.1 Rationale.
Interview style diagnostic assessment occurs as a one to one assessment between the student and educator. The purpose of an interview style diagnostic assessment is for the educator to observe and gain an insight into individual students mathematical thinking, reasoning and understanding with the use of questioning to probe students thinking (Reys et al., 2017, Ch4, 4.3). This allows for the educator to observe whether the student utilises conceptual or procedural knowledge for answering and a greater insight into students understanding. Furthermore providing the educator with a wealth of information on the students strengths, weaknesses, misconceptions or gaps in their knowledge therefore allowing for educators to establish a mathematical profile on each student (Burns, 2010, p. 19).
