Diagnostic Response to “Claiming an Education Speech by Adrienne Rich” At the beginning of the speech, Rich shows her take on the education of women and how it should be. Moreover, she explains how throughout history women have limitations for acquiring higher education. Although there is a change, what they teach is still the same. She claims that in modern society, people prefer changing things that are foreign and the teachings of today bases in a man’s perspective; by this, she does not mean man in general. Furthermore, she says that the people exclude points of view of the minorities and women. Rich puts emphasis on active discussion, imaginative and intellectual capacity, and clear thinking to persuade the audience that there is truth in new ideas.
As her speech progresses, she discusses a discovery by individuals of other races that their views are not accountable in human studies. Ideally, it is not right as their experiences are equally important to other people’s ones and just as wonderful. Besides, their ideas of experiences, relationships and history can differ from what the white men teach. Moreover, she argues that times are changing, and women want to get enough education and be real to explore all their points of views, not just the men’s. According to Rich, Men are the ones who write the way studies are, the text we read, and the lectures we listen to and they divide it into parts that we are. She asserts that women have an urge to work outside their homes, and this is how they discover a part of the world’s history. Furthermore, from her speech we can see that different people have varying experiences, and the experiences women have must make up more than half of these experiences in total.
