Only recently have women been given the chance to receive higher education. Social change during the 19th century challenges the roles of women in life. In 1980, the number of women going to college changed to be equal to the number of men who attended college. The first movements of women’s rights started mid 19th century. This movement was for social and economic changes for women, who were held back by men and society's view of women in general. The social stigma for women to go to college or a higher education prevented them from getting jobs outside household jobs because they believed they did not deserve having a job.
