Jane Addams lived from 1860-1935. In the time era she lived in, civil rights was a major conflict. Sexism and racism was common in the 1800’s and Addams was an activist who was in favor of equal rights. In a time when females weren’t treated equally she tried to make it fair for all and she made a name for herself in the process. Jane went to a women’s medical college in Philadelphia only because she was “wealthy and privileged”. At that time in her life she had gotten ill and dropped out but continued her work as a philanthropist. Women were not recognized as sociologists and their studies were often ignored because men were the dominate ones in that career field. She worked with W.E.B. Du Bois to help create a foundation for African Americans to gain equality. She co-founded the Hull House, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, The National Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Center, The Chicago Federation of settlement and the American Civil Liberties Union. The Hull House was one of her greatest accomplishments during the civil rights movement because it was created with the intent of being a safe house for anyone in need. The shelter was used to provide a center for a higher and civic social life as well as bringing all races and genders together. When she brought different races and genders together it helped to accomplish educating each other of all they had in common and the things that set them apart and made them unique. It didn’t matter what race, any color was welcomed into the Hull House and that in itself was significant. Peasants, immigrants, poor, sick; anyone in need was sheltered and the house was visited by two thousand people an hour on average. Her founding the Hull house inspired another volunteer to start up a kindergarten and the first addition was an art gallery.
