The role of women before the progressive movement was not that good. Women were still stay at home mother, but there were some who did have an education. Only a few had an education and those who did made a difference. Women had rights, but only a few. When the Progressive Era came along women suffrage started to get more national attention. Women started to lead movements and unions. Feminism started to become a thing. Jane Addams a wealthy white woman gained wealth and started a settlement house with her friend Ellen Gates Starr. During this time, it was illegal to abort so women still had no chose if they wanted to abort. In 1911 due to the fire of the Triangle shirtwaist company the publics outcry caused an investigation that eventually led to a state factory safety law. Women were granted protection. Women were still not allowed to vote nor hold office. Woman could vote in only 4 states, but that soon changed in 1910, when Washington approved women’s suffrage and other states followed. By the 1910s Women’s Suffrage became a massive movement and 1916 the first woman was elected into office; Jeannette Rankin was elected into the U.S. House of Representatives. Jane Addams an advocate of women’s rights also advocated for the rights of Blacks. She “argued to add black rights to the Republican and Progressive Party platforms in 1912, but she lost.” Jane Addams opened the Hull House a settlement house. Even though she was not the first to open one in America she was the most successful and known. She caused national attention and gained huge sponsors.
